We Are Northern Energy Innovation

Greetings readers. Welcome to the launch of our Northern Energy Innovation blog! Sit down, take a load off and feel free to learn a bit about energy systems up here in the North. First time hearing about us? Glad you’re here and welcome, we’ll talk about who we are, what we do and what to expect from the blog.

A Little Bit About Us

We are Northern Energy Innovation, an applied research program that addresses the needs of the northern energy industry through community partnerships and direct support from northern electric power utilities. Our goal is to focus on coming up with solutions to the common and unique issues faced by the electric energy industry. We are an unbiased and transparent honest broker that provides independent technical results for the benefit of the northern energy industry and all stakeholders alike. We focus our work on electric power system engineering to provide technical expertise to utilities and communities, with an emphasis on bridging knowledge gaps for successful projects.

Founded in Late 2016, Northern Energy Innovation (NEI) supports and develops new energy solutions for Northern Canadian communities. Our team has the expertise to understand and overcome the challenges faced in the North, and has worked closely with Communities, First Nations, Utilities, and Government Agencies on various energy related projects across the North. As a research program at Yukon University, we strive to ensure our work is transparent, unbiased and that results are available and accessible to all.

What To Expect

This blog will go into all things about energy systems, new technologies as well as our results from current and past projects to help you understand more about the energy landscape here in the North. You should expect a new post bi-weekly and more posts when something new comes up!

Integrating Renewables in Remote Communities

The Canadian north is an expansive region with a low population density, which poses some unusual challenges to providing modern conveniences like on-demand electricity. The remoteness of many communities in the north makes it necessary to generate power locally. For most communities, this is accomplished with diesel generators. There are 55 diesel-powered communities among the…

Nuclear in the North: Small Modular Reactors

How Can Nuclear Energy be used in Northern Canada? It may seem odd to talk about nuclear power in northern Canada, as it is typically thought of as powering dense urban areas and requiring immense infrastructure and technical expertise. However, a new type of nuclear power plant, a small modular reactor (SMR), is expanding where…
