Project Summary

Research and Literature Review on Energy Education for Northern Communities Northern Energy Innovation is seeking funding for a summer student to conduct a comprehensive literature review to support the development of culturally relevant energy education programming for northern and Indigenous communities. This project aims to explore key themes including energy justice, capacity building, and energy literacy, with a focus on identifying best practices, lessons learned, and critical restraints and issues related to energy capacity in remote and Indigenous contexts. The review will examine academic and grey literature to evaluate existing energy literacy programs and resources, with attention to how these initiatives address energy security and promote community-led energy capacity. A central aspect of the review will include investigating how energy education can be Indigenized to align with local knowledge systems, cultural values, and governance structures. This research will contribute foundational insights to inform the design and delivery of educational programming that supports sustainable energy transitions and community empowerment in the North. The review will synthesize information into thematic areas and highlight recommendations for program development, stakeholder engagement, and future research. The final output will be a summary report and annotated bibliography that will directly inform Northern Energy Innovation’s evolving strategy in energy literacy and outreach.
